07 Pacifica tranny clunk, please read!
 

I'm having some minor tranny issues. Yes, my 6 speed isn't the smoothest transmission, but I've accepted that. The 6 speed isn't very smooth in our Sebring or Journey, either. Anyways, it clunks pretty badly when I put it into reverse or drive ONLY. Its bad when the car is on an incline, but its a little better when it's on flat ground. My mechanic suspects a bad motor and or transmission mount, but could it be another issue? It has over 216,xxx KM on it, so I might also have to put new fluid in it. Anyways, I just want to brace myself for a tranny rebuild or torque converter replacement lol. I do love my Pacifica, though! Looks, rides, and handles like the day it was built (even with 216,xxx KM on it), BUILT LIKE A TANK!

how is your fluid level and condition?

aside from that, our pac had a pretty bad clunk too, the motor mount fixed ours.... ours was pretty shot

I just bought a used 2005 with 109K on it,....in really good condition.

Took it on long trip from Fl up to Md day after I bought it, and began to experience a little problem at idle when first starting up,...engine would tend to drop off smooth idle, and the car would clunk around just a wee bit with the transmission at low speeds.

Simply took off the air cleaner filter and cleaned it out thoroughly. Now idle is real smooth, and no transmission bucking.

So, she's going in tomorrow. Turns out it was both front and rear mounts, tranny mount is fine. I guess the other mounts can cause clunking, too. It will cost me $399!!

Mine does that every now and then but just when I put it in reverse and start backing up. I have the front hub nuts tighten and the noise goes away.

You are saying that the front hub bearings can come loose??

This is similar to what I had read before and it worked for my particular problem.


There is a different symptom that WAS real common years ago among one model. That was a single click when you accelerated forward, then it would make a single click when you backed up. The click would never occur twice going in the same direction; only once backing, then once going forward. That was caused by a loose axle nut. The fix was to remove the wheel, then the cotter pin and retighten the nut with a click-type torque wrench. The torque value, (tightness), is critical for the life of the wheel bearing assembly. By working loose the splines on the axle shaft would knock against the splines of the hub each time the direction was changed and the car was accelerated a little. Usually one re-tightening was all that was needed. If you're hearing multiple continuous clicks, the axle nut is not the cause.

I had this "single click" issue with mine. I found out from a thread "06 Pacifica Ft. rattles, clunks" by "tscasny" that there exist a TSB 03-002-06 about this issue. I bought rubber gaskets as the TSB describes, mounted them and newer had the noise again.
