Default limp mode

First I have to say, I know nothing about cars, but I do really like the look of PT Cruiser. Please help...I bought my 2nd PT Cruiser couple of weeks ago (after my last one died at 83K mileage on the way home with broken timing belt). This one I just bought is 2006 convertible, 72K mileage. It's from a private seller who only had this car for his wife for 3 months and didn't know history of this car at all. I picked it up and drove home with no problem. But next day when I drove on motorway, the speedometer started moving down and up. But it didn't stay at the bottom and didn't stop the car neither. It was on and off moving like this for about 15 minute. On the way home it didn't happen again. But it did happen again for about 3 times during the week. I took the car for MOT. It failed first with ABS fault. My garage said once it's sorted the problem I had with the speedometer should be solved as well. I drove away with confidence. However, 2 days later this car went into limp mode (speedometer dropped to 0, and this time it didn't move back up, I couldn't accelerate, steering wheel became very tight to move). I pulled out on the side before car completely stopped. I switch it off and started again, it worked, so I managed to drive home...I'm planning to take it to a local garage for a check. But our garage is not familiar with this car (we live in England where seem to not have many Chrysler). Anyone ever had similar issues, or anything to suggest please?
