Default What is this? Tool or engine Part?

First Time guest so thank you to those who support this platform with your knowledge.

We are helping a brother of ours who is in need with repairing his engine.

We bought a salvage yard engine as the replacement.

We found some issues with the salvage engine as we went though the inspection of components.

When we rotated the engine on the stand and we hear some, tink tink noise from the bottom.

We pulled the oil pan and found on of these goodies, see photos, sitting on the oil pump pick up.

Then found the other sitting on the underside of the piston.

We can't figure out what the heck these parts are. Are they from the car? Or are they from a tool?

There is no urgency on responses; we have elected to not use the salvage engine and are working in the engine that came with the car.

We just thought we would throw it out there to the folks in the know see if there is soemthing we are missing.

Parts were found in the oil pan.

Thank you in advance for reading and having a look.
