'00 T&C Tranny problem?

Car runs fine until I hit about 40 mph and then it has trouble getting into 4th gear---either doesn't go into 4th at all and continues to rev or bumps a little and finally gets in. It runs fine from 0 to about 40 mph. Other symptom, when engine is cold and I start it up, if I don't wait a minute or two, any attempts to put car into drive result in a stall. Reverse and neutral are fine, but if I don't wait about a minute then when I put it into drive it stalls. By the way, OBD light is on (solid, not flashing).

I took it to my local mechanic today (who doesn't service transmissions) and he said the codes that came back said something about 'solenoids', he didn't go into details. He said 'it is an internal transmission issue' but he didn't think it should be too expensive.

I know this is not much to go on but I'm just trying to get a feel about what this should cost me if it is just replacing a solenoid. I've got an appointment to take it to my local dealer ( I try to avoid dealers but I've already been taken by two tranny guys and this dealer has been pretty square with me overall).

Any help on input would be greatly appreciated!

thanks

Adam

your selenoids are on the outside of the tranny

Follow up----dealer said 'Your transmission is shot! It's probably going to run about $4,000!' He then went on and said that the overdrive clutch is burned out, the timing case is leaking and the heater tubes are corroded. Then he said that I need a tuneup and several other basic maintenance issues addressed.

I know nothing about transmissions but I was able to drive my car the 25 miles to this dealer and the only problem that I was having was that it was not getting into 4th gear. All other gears are fine, it just won't go into 4th. How that has turned into a $4,000 repair is beyond me.

I now sent it over to a locally owned transmission specialist who has come highly recommended. Hopefully, he'll tell me that the dealer is full of crap and that it will only be a relay or a solenoid or something to that effect.
