1999 gearbox leak (manual)

is this common, and where is the possible place of leaking??

Hope you guys can help, just picked this car up (UK, 2.0LE, 5sp Manual) and don't particularly want a knackered gearbox!!

RE: 1999 gearbox leak (manual)

ok, just been out to look, and there was a big pool of oil on top of the gearbox, inboard to the clutch actuator, and I just can't work out where it could of come from.

Also, where is the gearbox top-up point?

I wonder 10-13-2008 02:52 AM

if you have an oil stain on top of the gearbox, that's NOT gearbox oil.
that's engine oil, and it can come from valve cover gasket, CAM sensor, EGR valve pipe, PCV hose on the intake air box.....

just in case, gearbox oil filling point is on the side. look behind front left wheel and you'll see the gearbox. side towards you, or the one facing forward, should have a plastic cork. remove the cork (unwind it) and check oil level. it should be up to the filling point.
remeber that this cars have engine oil in gearboxes. DO NOT put normal gearbox oil.
