I dug out a service manual and if you got your hands on one, you'd have the answer, with pictures and clear directions on how to do this.

Not an easy job especially if you're a novice. You need to remove the oil pan, oil pump pickup tube, timing belt and a special tool to remove the crank sprocket.

i have the chilton book, and it says you can get to it without removing the oilpan or dip stick.but doesnt tell you how.i have looked at many pictures on the web,an it shows it being in differant places on the pump.it also shows the oil filter sideways and mine is up and down.i have run mobil 1 in it from day 1,changed it every 5,000 miles.now i have an intermttent knock in the engine.i put thicker oil in it 15w50 mobil 1 and it still knocked on an off.then i put in a can of stp and it still does the same thing.any guesses what it could be.i cant find anything on the web.
Thanks Darren

Without verifying the oil pressure, you're just wasting your time. It's really common to have a knock in these engines. I have a customer with a 1999 Stratus 2.4 that's had a knock for 5 years. It sounded like a wrist pin knock. It was going to cost him over $1000 to go thru the engine to resolve the knock. It didn't seem that bad. Again after 5 years and over 50,000 miles, the knock is still there and hasn't failed.
