2002 T&C Air Filter Replacement
 

Hello all
For a 2002 T&C, 3.8. I read that it is possilbe to replace the air filter with a new high performance air filter, for better milage. Can anyone provide me with a photo or diagram where the air filter is located under the hood? Can anyone recommend an aftermarket air filter that will improve milage.

The air filter box is directly in front of you when you pop the hood on my '98. I assume yours'll be the same. It's the square, black plastic box that is connected at the back to the air intake to the engine and throttle body and it has 2 bolts that you eneed to undo which are located in the top of the front slam panel.

I personally swear by K&N brand filters, I have them on everything from my personal vehicles to my semi truck. BUT (and there's always a but) I use them for ENGINE PROTECTION, not economy reasons.
Performance filters MAY give a few extra horsepower BUT you will only be able to turn this into exconomy IF you have the discipline to stay light on the throttle. Getting more horsepower from your motor then keeping your right foot buried in the carpet WON'T give you any better economy, no matter how you got the extra power but it WILL if you have the discipline.

Performance filters come in 2 styles, " OEM" style, where you open the air box and drop it in then forget about it (which is the kind I use) and the high performance style where you have to do some mods to the intake on your motor, including throwing the air box away and installing a tuned intake pipe. This also increases engine noise and may interfere with warranties.

There are specific instructions about occasional maintenance of your performance filters and you need to follow them to get maximum protection and to prevent the oiling-up of some intake sensors that will cause bad running problems later but overall, they are an excellent product and will last the lifetime of your vehicle (I have one that has done over a million miles now).
