2005 grand voyager stalling

I hope someone can help me.
I have a 2005 crd automatic grand voyager. I've been having a problem with it for just over a week and its now at the garage. They don't seem to know whats wrong with it - useless!

When the car is slowing down at lights for example it jumps around like a kangaroo then stalls. it revs ok when in "park", then when i put it into "drive" it stalls. Also does it in reverse. The mechanic has put a more powerful battery on it incase that was the problem (maybe something not getting enough charge) but that hasn't helped.

Has anyone else had this problem or have idea what it could be. It has been suggested that it could need a new gear box :eek::eek::eek: I really can't afford to pay out ££££'s. I could understand if it was an old car, but i wouldn't say 5yrs is very old.

I absolutely love my car and hope I can get it back on the road asap.

Are there any codes? do a search on here, last one was just fuel filter but I would search under code 1130 as it's more likely a fuel pressure problem not a gearbox problem. is yours a 2.8 or 2.5? if it's a 2.8 first place to look is the fuel filter housing heater plug this plug melts and lets air into the fuel line. (there is a modification for this and come with new fuel filter)

Thanks Merlin. It has been on the diagnostics check computer and has come up with no errors. its a 2.8.
Would a fuel pressure problem or fuel filter show an error code on the diagnostic check?
My hubby (who knows nothing at all about mechanics!) is ringing the garage in the morning with a list of problems it could be after googling it, and to find out exaclty what they've tried.

what's the list he has? is it a dealer? if not are they able to check for tcm (gearbox) fault codes as well as the engine? can they see fuel pressure with there machine?
I would also check bother the ECM and TCM software up to date (AF) level as this is important to stop the engine blowing up the gearbox.

Hi, I am interested to know if your problem was resolved and what the cure was, my 2.8CRD (Auto) just cut out the other day whilst accelerating, and is now on occasions is difficult to start and then when is does start, it 'chugs' then either runs smoothly or cuts out and requires a fair bit of cranking to get it going.
Merlin....any thoughts?

Check the fuel filter heater plug. Unplug it and look for fuel in the plug or burning of the contacts/ terminals in the plug.

Hi

I have today finally got my car back!

We first took it to the garage attached to where we bought the car from, they are used to repairing Chryslers. They hooked it up to the diagnostics and it came up with no codes, they put on a new battery as the existing one was quite weak (with the hope that maybe something wasn't being charged fully) they then told us it seemed to be driving ok so we collected the car and it was fine for a week.

The problem then started again, only this time seemed worse.

It broke down completely (on my husband thankfully!) and we had to call out a recovery truck. the car was already booked in to go to a workshop that specialised in gearbox/transmissions the next day so the recovery truck took it straight there.

They had it for about 10 days. They hooked it up to diagnostics and it was coming up with loads of error codes that they'd never come across before. They ordered in a new valve unit for the transmission (sorry don't know exact part) which cost £385+vat (17.5%) Unfortunately this didn't fix it.

They took out the transmission and stripped it all down, the whole thing was wrecked. I've had to have a new transmission costing £1200 +vat.
I'm not "mechanically" minded but will explain as i understood it....something in the torque convertor was broken, the metal from that contaminated the oil which then went round the whole system. When the car was first started (and oil was cold) the problem wasn't too bad then as the oil heated up the metal was being spread through the whole transmission.

Unfortunately it has put me off buying chryslers. it has taken such a long time to find out the problem and cost such a lot of money, we can't afford to change it now though so i'm stuck with it (although i do actually love the car!)

Sorry for the long story, you just wanted to know the end result!

Has your Voyager done high mileage?

As far as I know Chrysler have been using the transmission in the Voyagers for many years in various cars....It's been developed over the years and has a reputation for being very reliable. Although technically you suffered a torque converter failure which then took out the transmission, I'd say you've been unlucky

Out if interest was £1200 + VAT the cost for a brand new transmission?

Now you really need to check the software level, like I posted earlier the CRD has so much torque it can blow up the gear box so the software level of both the engine and gearbox needs to be up to date.
I hope they have also flushed the oil cooler or replaced it or you will be replacing it again. I always replace now as I have had repeat failures even after flushing.

The car has done 61000 miles, so yes I guess I was unlucky!
The price was for a brand new transmission, 12 months warranty.

The oil filter was flushed.

Not sure what you mean about software levels?? How do we get this checked?

Last thing i need is another huge bill.
