99 town and country smells

We own a 99 town and country that every time we turn on the fans both on ac and heat it stinks horribly . What could be the cause of this. Our mechanic can't seem to find what the problem is. Thanks for the help.

Chances are you have mold/mildew on your evaporator or your drain is partially clogged. When the AC is turned on, do you see a puddle on the ground? If not, clean out the evap drain, which pokes thru the firewall. If you do have a puddle, than I would say you have a mold/mildew issue. A band aid that I have heard that works for a while is to turn on the AC (outside air, not recirc) on high and spray Lysol into the cowl. The Lysol will get sucked in and help with the mold and mildew. Have not tried it myself, but others have reported some success. Not permanent success, but for a few months. Other option is to remove the dash to clean out the evap, but I am guessing that you don't want to do that.

Thanks for the help. Not to sound completely foolish but the cowl is located where the windshield wipers are. Correct? Thanks again.

Yes, the plastic screen looking piece that runs the width of the car underneath the wipers. You will want to spray in the cowl on the passenger side. Don't be stingy, keep spraying!
