Airbag warning light

The airbag warning light started coming on intermitently a couple weeks ago - it would come on for some drives and wouldn't on others. Then, since a week or so ago it's been on consistently every ride. I checked codes, none are stored. I replaced the clock spring, no change. The horn and cruise work fine, but I figured it was worth $25 to try it.
So, what else can I try before I give up and bring it in? I'm really tempted to just ignore and forget it, is there any chance the bag could deploy without an accident while driving? any help appreciated.

2 things....How did you check for codes....Generic scan equipment will usually not interface with SRS.....And if the light is on..there is a code stored.

2) 25 bucks for a clockspring sounds like Junkyard parts...And they are not to be trusted.

Year make and model?????

2002 t&c. I bought it from Rock Auto, and it looks absolutely identical to the one that was in there - same manufacturer. Airbag light was off since I bought it 2 years ago until a couple weeks ago. Not sure what you think I should have paid for a clock spring, every one I found on my search was $25-$30.

Since I can't edit my post I'll reply to it. Couple questions: am I supposed to find the airbag code at the same connector as engine light codes or is it at another location? also, is there anything I'm supposed to do to reset the light?

You can reset the light all you want. It's still going to keep coming on if you don't fix the problem. YES, there is a good chance your airbag will NOT deploy if there is a DTC. No, a cheap OBD scanner will not read the Airbag module...or any other module except basic engine for that matter. If you don't have a scan tool to read the airbag you will get nowhere.

How does one reset the light?

CHRYSLER TECH 03-30-2011 11:27 PM

unplug the battery wait 10 seconds
I can assure u that it will be right back one when u start up the van the SRS will turn it right back on because the prob is not fixed

Which brings me back to my original question - are there any other easy things to try before paying a dealer to fix it?

CHRYSLER TECH 03-31-2011 08:48 AM

nope because until u know what the codes are then u are pissing in the wind

I'm pretty sure that your front airbag senosrs are faulty. They are cheap and easy to replace. This is a common problem - corroded contacts hence intermittent problems at first!

Edit: Sorry, the above only applies to 2005-2006 models: http://www.autoblog.com/2010/02/23/c...-airbag-issue/

I read somewhere that the airbag light will reset after a few key cycles, so I turned the key on/off about 10 times then went for a drive - after a few minutes of driving the airbag light came off for the first time in a week and stayed off. Now, when I start the van the airbag light comes on for a few seconds the goes off, just like it's supposed to.
Looks like my amateur parts, tools and experience strikes again!

Well, in all honesty, I would love to see the look on your face after your "COCKY ARROGANT AMATUER" attitude brings you back here in a week and no-one will help you....

chesthing 04-02-2011 04:41 PM

Speaking of Arrogant Assholes, this place is full of 'em.
I wonder why I was told I need to throw money away at the Stealers so they can reset the warning light? this is obviously bunk info, it went off on it's own. Don't worry about my bothering the brain-trusts on this forum again, if I want this quality of info I can ask my 10 year old his opinion.

Djinn-n-Tonic 04-02-2011 05:18 PM

Well the truth is...I own a 2000 Caravan with 307,000 On the clock, and I have NEVER seen My AIRBAG LAMP come on......

So ..I REALLY HAVE NO REASON TO CARE ABOUT WHAT YOU THINK......

MINE WORKS JUST FINE...

And as for BUNK INFO.......It was FREE...WHICH WAS MUCH CHEAPER THAN THE 25 Bucks you spent on the cLockspring that you didnt need.

@chesting: If you find an answer unusefull just skip it and don't bother with it too much.
Now, about your light, go to this page: Chrysler - Contact Us and enter last 8 characters of your VIN number.
If you will find you car listed there regarding airbag light, then you will know how to proceed...
