Clunky front end 1999 2.5TD
 

Hi , 1999 GV with a clunky front end. Recently replaced the swaybar bushes and links but still have this noise and thud when starting off and occasionally when turning. I`m now thinking suspension struts or at least the top mounts . Anybody have any ideas ? Thanks to all who reply.

A couple of things spring to mind.....A thud when starting off could well be an engine or gearbox mount.

If you still suspect suspension, look closely at the lower arm rear and front mount bushes....although these tend to cause clunks when going over bumps rather than starting off.

engine mounts had occourred to me as a cause for the clunk i`m getting . So i got a quote from the main stealer for a new set. £500 for just two of them !!! Ouch! I will now look for some equivalent after market items. Do you know of a way of testing the existing ones before i spend out on a new set ? Cheers

You could take the acoustic cover off the top of the engine, grab the engine and give it a really good shove back and forward......you won't be able to shove it nearly as hard as the engine can shove itself, so if you hear anything from the mount it will be a faint knock at best.

Or you could get someone to start the engine and with the hand brake applied engage first gear and raise the clutch to biting point while you watch the engine for excessive movement and a clunk.
