engine cut out probs

i have a grand voyager 2002 2.5crd ltd manual vm engine with 142k miles.
twice engine cut out on motoway, cruising 50mph ,drop to 4th put foot down ,ok for 2to 3 seconds then silence.starts again when stationary and when coasting.all lights on dash seem to light up only oil light stays on untill restart then ok.oil level ok.
anyone heard or this before ?

Oh yes, this sounds very familiar.

Couple of tests
1. Drive anywhere at a normal speed, and then floor the accelerator. I am willing to bet that it will cut out every time, but then restart as soon as you turn off the ignition and start it again - do this where the traffic is quiet and the road is straight as you will need to be able to coast to a halt without power steering.
2. Read out the error codes for the engine - to do this switch the ignition on (but not far enough to start the engine, just enough to light up the display) and off (as far off as it will go without using the key release button), then on, then off, then on again (all within 5 seconds) - the display should then start to read out all of your error codes. Again, I am willing to bet that you will get a P1130 code.

I had this when I got my Voyager - I got it fixed by the dealer (after threatening to reject the car) but I did manage to find the likely cause before I sent it back.

thanks acdt.what was the fault with yours in the end ?

Merlin 05-26-2009 02:04 PM

Get the codes and come back with what you have and I will help you.

just taken her out for a spin.she wont cut out now.like i said only happened twice ,yesterday, then 3 weeks before.if it happens again where would the error codes be displayed ?

actd 05-26-2009 02:42 PM

I've posted the instructions above for getting the codes - they are displayed on your mileage display on the speedometer. May take you a couple of attempts to get it to read out.

When is the last time you checked the fuel filter? This sounds suspiciously like a fuel starvation problem.

djr9163 05-26-2009 03:09 PM

OK, that one caught me by surprise, not at all what I was expecting. Quick search seems to show that it is a camshaft position sensor problem, and it seems to be associated with stalling problems. I'm now out of my depth on this - definitely one for Merlin.

djr9163 05-26-2009 03:35 PM

cheers actd. at least you have got me in the right direction. sounds expensive, but these buses are everytime eh ? thanks again

Merlin 05-27-2009 06:23 PM

Yes cam sensor is possible but more likely wiring to it. Look around the front engine mount/ gearbox bracket that the engine wire harness sits in and at the ECU plug (security bracket fitted to UK module). Look for any signs of the wire rubbing and shorting out. I have also had the wiring corroded as the wire harness bends upwards back to the ECU. Sensor is not very expensive if you want to try it if you can't see anything wrong with the wiring that you can see.

thanks you guys ..changed cam sensor and code alert seems to have stopped appearing ..havent been on a long run yet! but am hopefull. hope this helps others.thanks again

Me too...

I've been having the same problem. Just went out and got the error code and I'm getting P1130. What does it mean?

actd 06-23-2009 04:45 AM

Now this IS the same problem that I had - it's low pressure in the fuel pressure rail. Merlin's the best one to help, but if not, I have some instructions somewhere - send me a PM with your email and I'll dig it out.

What happened to your P1130 error code?

Does the engine cut out if you floor the accelerator at lower speeds?

djr9163 07-02-2009 02:53 PM

never had that code .someone else i think.only had p0340 prior to new cam sensor. never cuts out at low speed.

Stroudie 07-03-2009 04:45 AM

The P1130 code was me.

Unfortunately, before we've had a chance to investigate further my husband lost his mind temporarily and put £70 worth of petrol in it and drove about 20 metres down the road before it gave up on him .
I think we're cursed. The garage is draining it but I think it's going to be super expensive and possibly terminal?
I'm not a happy bunny.:(
