Engine cuts out after filling up

I have a 2007 T&C Touring. It cuts out after filling up and, today, it actually died at a red light right after filling up.

The gas cap is securely closed (3 clicks after closing).

Is there something else besides the gas cap I'm missing -- or is it time for service?

when does it cut out on ya? any check engine light?

nawajo 10-12-2010 10:36 AM

When driving out of the gas station, it will usually cut out after about a mile. Today I just happened to be at a red light at that time....then it died. A check engine light has never come on, though, before or after.

I just got a message from another forum stating that the T&C fuel tank does not cut off the fuel pumps quickly enough when filling up. Solution: If you have a 20 gallon tank, only fill 19 gallons. I'll see if this is a solution and reply later.

Solution

It worked. I only put in 15 gallons instead of filling up and the engine did not cut out at all.

Normally when you fill up, do you stop the first time the pump shuts off or do you keep clicking the pump to top it off?

I stopped filling up after the first cut-off. Ever since I've been filling it up (minus half a gallon in the tank), I have not had the problem again.

Problem solved :)

Good chance the ORVR valve is not closing. Your fix is a whole lot cheaper.

Good, that's what you're supposed to do. There was nothing wrong with your car. The EVAP was getting flooded with raw fuel and getting passed into your purge then into the intake. When you keep clicking and clicking the pump, you force fuel in where only vapors should be.

Now, under normal circumstances that might be true, but not in this case. The individual who answered that post didn't ask the right questions. He is a copier/paster mostly. Next time you're at the gas station watch people. Most people will stop after the first click. Others wil sit there and bang away. No offense to anyone, but it's usually older people and new drivers. I just stand there and giggle while the pump hose almost shakes out of my hand...lolz.

Hey, what can I say? I'm a little slow Tech1. Are you saying ORVR valve or not, don't top off your tank or...

BTW - I'm in the "banger" category. Been putting in an "extra" half gallon after the first click for decades. Once at a half gallon, I tap it till the price ends in a 0 or 5. Then if my CC statement shows something other than a 0 or 5 I know someone is tapping my credit card.

Have the same problem on T&C 2004, rough idle and some time stops after filling up the gas tank. Stopping at the first click. So the solution is stop before ? How do you know when to stop ?

I have to ask, why would you do this? Every gas station has a sign that says "don't top off". So to top off is violating their rule. And it's known to be bad for your car (harms the EVAP system, charcoal filter, etc.).
