Engine cuts out randomly?

We have a 1991 Grand Voyager CRD 2.5 Diesel which has a totally unpredictable fault. The engine cuts out totally and everything switches off. You have to pull over, switch it off and then it starts straight away like nothing has happened.
This can occur at any speed, or any revs, although seems to happen more often when going up hill. It doesn't happen all the time, but occasionally does it up to 3 times in a row on the way home.
Obviously this is very dangerous as there have been times when I've been going up hill round a corner and it just stops dead. Not usually the best place to park!
Any ideas what it could be?

Thanks for that Merlin. However, being a busy mum and not being highly mechanically minded, it doesn't make much sense to me and I'm not going to try to fix it myself. Was wondering what to say if I take it to Chrysler though. Will they locate the fault immediately or just replace parts to find the fault?
What's the worst case scenario?
I'm also having trouble with the ABS warning light coming on. Have had 2 sensors replaced to no avail.
Your help is much appreciated.
:)

Were do you live? would hope they don't just replace things but depends on the dealer I guess. you can always print off the other post so you will know what questions to ask (like leak back test) also ask about fuel pressure compare set point to actual, as more them 300 psi fluctuation is a sign you have an active fault so should rule out try that diagnosis.
As for the ABS fault what fault code do you keep getting that they can't fix and what sensors have you had?
