Which Engine Oil 2.5 CRD 109k?
Hi Guys
I have owned my Voyager approx 2 weeks,I had a bit of trouble with smoke 60 miles after picking it up (burning oil I believe) but I changed the air filter,popped in a bottle of stop smoke,some diesel injector cleaner,changed the exhaust and it seems to have stopped. The previous owner told me that it had recently had the turbo changed,so I thought it may have been excess oil in the exhaust,and as the car had only been driven around town,it may not have burnt off until I got it on the motorway at a steady 70-80mph for 60 miles? Anyway,I have had the gearbox oil changed today,to tick that off the list of things to do but was wondering what engine oil should be used at the change? It has done 109k,and has been changed religiously evry 10k from new and is due a change in the next 1000 miles,should it be semi synthetic or synthetic and which grade? The castrol website said 5-40 fully synthetic,but 2 gargaes have said to use 10-40. Please help? Thanks in advance John |
Chrysler say to use 10W-40 oil....unless the ambient temperature consistently drops below -10 celcius......so in the UK that'll be 10W-40.
Don't know where castrol get 5W-40 from. The manual says if the temp gets below -10 alot, to use 5w-30 oil. (or 5w-40 if you can't get 5w-30) As for synthetic semi synthetic etc, the manual says it doesn't matter as long as the oil conforms to ACEA B3 or B4. I used semi synthetic on my last oil change, but before that used standard oil. I don't think it really matters on a car with an oil change interval of 12,000 miles if you always get it changed as per the service interval. |
Thanks for that,I had 10w-40 synthetic and a new filter. It must be a phsycological thing,but it seems to run a lot better,with that and new gearbox oil? It feels so much lighter :)

Engine Oil.
My Motorfactor has my 2003 Grande Voyager 2.5 CRD down for FUCHS TITAN SYN MC 10W-40 Oil, spec ACEA A3/B4....API SL/CF...But any other Manufacturer with same spec should do...But make sure its at least Synthetic or Semi to look after your Turbo...

Chrysler main dealers use Mobil 1 0/40. American oil company !

the fully synthetic 0 and 5 oils are a bit too thin in my opinion, particularly on an older engine.
I use chevron semi-synthetic 10w-40 from costco, about £35 for 25L - mainly because on my old volvo running on veg I change the oil every 6000 (which can be every 6 weeks!) Regards Richard |
The problem with a semi synth oil is you don't know how much full synth is in it! I use 5-30 100% synth in my 96k 2.8L oil burner. I think the owners handbook says a 5-30

oh dear, I have been using 5w30 oil in my 2002 Grand voyager 2.5CRD :/ If it is too thin then what damage could this cause on my old engine at 115k miles?

Any vehicle with a turbocharger is best off with full synthetic of the PAO type. This is because the turbine bearings run very hot indeed and very fast at full power, like mountain climbing. Mineral oil will carbonize at those temps. The best grade of oil is that advised in the handbook.
