The gremlins are at work again!
 

Okay so a while back I posted about issues I was having with the transmission and a follow up to what had been done and the results. Well I have a new issues BUT, the OBDII Code is once again suggesting output sensor.

So, everything was working fine, then about a week ago I'd been in town, van was driving fine. parked up for about 20 mins, returned, van started and drove fine for a mile or two then suddenly began just dying for an instant under acceleration. This instantly put the transmission into limp mode for a few hundred yards. then everything was fine. So I continued on my way, it did it again. This time it popped as if the timing was way off, speedo needle bounced off the 120 mark and once again, everything seemed okay. This continued on and off all the way home.

So next morning I head off to my cousins house as he had my code reader, the van drove perfectly, no issues. I did a read and it returned no error code. I went around and checked the wiring and all seemed fine. So the next day went off and again it was driving fine, parked up at the supermarket, came out to fine I'd been rear ended. Long story short they'd hit the exhaust breaking it off up near the cat. So I've replaced the front section and cat, again it been fine ever since.

Now this morning its coughing and spluttering again. Just for a moment and the only code its returning is P0720 which if I'm not mistaken is output speed sensor.

Now, both input and output sensor have been replaced within the past few weeks, plugs and ht wires about 6 months ago. Fresh oil and filter in the trans.

So I'm thinking the P0720 code could be more of a symptom rather than the fault however, it only appear to happen after the van has reached full operating temp and then parked up for 20 or so minutes.

Any thoughts?

Sounds so much like an electrical resistance due to poor connection. How about IPM fuse box.

Thanks' I'll check that today, also going to pull the EGR valve and test it! Although nearing that point of calling it quits with the old gal! May just nurse her through till early next year and go off in search of something different!

Like a newer one of course. Hard to beat the power of the CRD Diesel, leather interior, electric doors and oodles of space inside. And there's loads of ones either side of 2003 going cheap with silly fixable repairs. Good luck..

Yeah My cousin has a 2008 2.8 CDR Nice van but he's had a lot of issues with it. Its currently sitting on his drive waiting a head gasket. Although he didn't have much luck with his 2.5 which he'd owned from new. Similar issues ended up one of those breaking for parts deals on ebay!

Although personalty I love the mid 2000's 3.8 AWD. That's what I had back in the US and would have liked to have found one on my return but they just didn't offer them here. But I can't complain at this old girl, I've put a lot of miles on her in 2 years. She's been down to the south of France twice, survived several trips to Germany and hauled quad bikes all over the country. However, this recent thing is just been bad timing.

I've been working on a house project with a buddy and it was due to end this summer, however, unfortunately he's had a real bad year. Wife seriously ill, mother hospitalized etc. So its gotten pushed further and further back so I don't have a lot of money to play with.

However, I've just returned from a trip down to Devon and she hasn't missed a beat all week. 1200 plus trouble free miles so I don't know what to do right now. Ahhhhhh!

Oh here there is a thread on here I found while looking into Auto Box faults and it related to a box going into limp mode now and again. Fault was due to a wire between Auto box and control module chaffing. So check back all your wires going to the box.

Well spent yesterday crawling all over it and nothing. The electrical all seem fine. However, went out last night, the van sat for about 20 mins, started back home and it did it again. It's always in the period when the engine has begun to cool and is not cold but not at operating temp. Started fine drove for about half a mile then cough, cough splutter. Trans into limp mode for a moment then back out of it again!

Therefore at this point I don't think it has anything to do with the transmission, rather that is just a symptom of something somewhere else. That's the problem with these integrated systems.

So I'm still wondering if it could be linked to the EGR valve. I was going to buy the cleaning kit but then realized they're damned expensive, about half the price of of a new valve! Oh well just keep on plugging away at it.

Well I am having a Doh moment. Of course it been running fine. I spent the entire week driving on LPG. hahaha well at least it narrows it down.

Hi guys its been a while, but I got chatting to a guy from the local 4x4 club and he'd had a similar issue with his Grand Cherokee. Anyway, his advice was to put a new ground strap between the engine and body, and I've just had the old girl over to Germany for almost 3 weeks and not a single problem so I think its safe to say that cured the problem.

However this bring up an issue I've had with newer vehicles with these integrated systems; that is, the problem may not lie where you think. For example my old XJR had a stalling issue on deceleration which turned out to be a faulty ABS sensor, I had a C55 AMG which would on occasion limit you to 3000 rpm, this turned out to be a faulty HVAC sensor, a Mustang GT which wouldn't shift above 3rd gear because of a defective spark plug. hahaha Gah I miss the good old days. LOL!

hahaha, for a moment I thought I'd wandered into one of those strange websites that you hear about!

I have a 1+2 phone on Cyanogen [root] protected to the point where its impossible to install anything to it because its kernel driven. But not protected from me - my 9 year old grand-kid decided to do his granddad a favour and install a TV EPR app [clearly infected] for his granddad me without asking and over rode the protection. It never occurred to me to protect it from myself. It now has an encrypted password. That'll fettle the little fellah.
