Noisy,rattling 2.5 crd engine
Hi guys
I have had my voyager approx a month now and I am not feeling too confident with the engine. I had a few issues with a smokey engine, after an oil change that seems to have resolved itself. The exhaust back box was rattling and tickover,a new exhaust sorted that. But my engine sounds a bit noisy, with a metallic, rattling noise on tickover or when revving the engine. Could it be the manifold? I know the car had a replacement turbo recently, would they have removed the manifold to do this? Or are they just a noisy engine? Any help would be appreciated Thanks John |
Sounds like something has worked loose....a heat shield or something.
By todays standards I find the 2.5/2.8 CRD engines are a bit loud and rough at idle, although when cruising on the motorway mine seems alot smoother. |

I've had injector issues recently and when one of them was a bit worse than just leaking slightly, it was giving a rattle like tappets can.
Take the engine cover off and see if theres any carbon build up. May also show up as exhaust fumes or diesel fumes inside the car. |
Thanks guys,
I have tried putting injector cleaner fluid in the tank, millers on the first tank and wynns on the second. Neither seem to have made any difference. I have also changed the oil again and tried adding a tin of Ammtech Engine Restore to the oil (this stuff worked wonders on my Vauxhall Combo Vans). I took the car away this weekend, about 120 miles down the M4 and it drove fine and pulled well, even with 4 adults,3 children and luggage.but when I pull off from traffic lights and accelerate hard, there is quite a lot of black, sooty type smoke initially, then it clears. I will stick with it for a minute, keep you posted and maybe get a diesel specialist to take a look. I thought it maybe an injector? Or I had this on a Saab TD and it turned out that the timing was out on the fuel pump slightly (I think it was slightly to advanced and gave over fuelling) Thanks again John |
