possible head gasket 2.5 crd

over the last week after replaceing the rad the car has started to intermittantly smoke
it appeared to be white in colour which would point to burning water however it did this for about a mile then got onto dual carriage way and it cleared
the following morning it did it again about half a mile from home after start up
i have had the injectors checked out and they are ok, i have a coolant leak somewhere which could be linked to the problem i am having
i spoke to a friend earlier and he said he had a simlar problem with a bmw which turned out to be the head gasket had de-laminated and water was weeping through into the cylinder ....could this be the case has anyone else had similar issues

anyone had the pleasure of doing one of these ....

voyager_dan 11-11-2011 04:51 PM

well obviously no one has done one!
i have now started stripping the engine to remove the head

voyager_dan 11-13-2011 04:01 PM

head gasket all done started it friday evening (only got alittle bit done)
head was off by 1pm on saturday , evidence of water running down the side of the bore on No2 cylinder so this was my problem
all back together and running by 2pm today (sunday)
road tested and all good runs better and best of all NO SMOKE !!!
it wasnt too bad a job

i will add that J.N.L engineering in camberley who are VM specialists are the most helpful people sorted me out all the gaskets at a fraction of the price of anywhere else i called

Good work. Don't see many CRD head gasket failures on the forum, so good info there.

I had a K series rover engine head gasket go a number of years ago, with very similar symptoms to you. ie coolant loss with no leak but no oil in the water. I suspected head gasket early on as they routinely fail on those K series engines.

What mileage does your Voyager have?

Glad to hear it worked well, thankyou for the info on JNL

right update, still losing water and occasional smoking (should have got a pressure test done when head was off!!!!)

looking like a porus head the water must be going in on induction side not compression as it is not overheating or pressureuising the coolant system
i have managed to get a head off a friend just got to find the time to do it
i put some K seal in the coolant resevoir this has stopped the leak but i will change the head as i dont regard this as a permenant repair i dont like using the stuff really but if it keeps it driveable for a few more weeks to give me more time to remove the head again
from what info i can find on the net this is a rare issue with the VM engines guess i have been unlucky with this one

Really would appreciate if you could keep us updated of your progress. I'm sure that anyone that can, will chip in with advice if they have experience of this problem.
