Revs very slow to drop

Hi all,
i am new to this forum and i am wondering if any can point me in the right direction with this problem i have.
I have recently bought a voyager 1998 2.0 ltr petrol.
I am real pleased wit it apart from a ****ley problem that the revs take for ever to drop, they do eventually but nowhere near fast enough, this makes the car act like its on kangaroo juice at low revs (trying to keep going jumping) and it also seems to lack power when acclerating.
i have changed the plugs, leads and tried the on board codes with the on of ignition but no joy, i am wondering if a vaccum leak or can anyone help?
regards

I have the same issue, with poor MPG and a hot cat usually. I am leaning towards a fuelling issue rather than a sensor fault.

bingy1972 02-04-2011 03:26 PM

i hear what you are saying about the fuel problem as mine over fuels also, but that could be down to a air leak and the ecu telling mor fuel to go in do you think? Have you tried a obd test on it or anything else? im sure we can work it out as we have the same issue. i will advise on what i have tried but my first call is to replace a few hoses on egr valve ect as they are pennies.
if there was a fault with the air intake sensor that should come up on obd scan? what you think?

dcm1971 02-05-2011 04:48 AM

Mines been on an OBDII scanner, no faults found, the ECU has been reset a couple of times and it quickly goes back to what it was doing. I spoke to a friend of mine in the States who was a Chrysler Tech, he suggested going on a diagnostic and looking at the fuel trim figures, if they were high, then fuel pump, if they were normal, to do a fuel pressure check.

bingy1972 02-06-2011 03:33 PM

ahh right thats interesting, the only other thing i have done is put fuel injector cleaner in, and to be fair it seemed a lot better for a day or so and now back to normal if anything worse, its propa head doing! Id put it on a full diagnostics but i personaly wudnt know what the figures ment! so it could be down to fuel pump?

dcm1971 03-09-2011 02:48 PM

Well, dunno if it coincidence, but this week, my fuel pump failed.

bingy1972 03-10-2011 09:30 AM

hi again,
wow thhat a bummer, plz let me know if you going to replace it and what happens.
cheers

Fuel pump MODULE is on order, and tank o-ring, not at all cheap.

bingy1972 03-11-2011 09:19 AM

ohh no how much if you dont mind? i realy hope it sorts the problem, mine rives me nuts!

dcm1971 03-11-2011 03:31 PM

Well, car is fixed, I collect it tomorrow, so hopefully it is all sorted, if it isn't, will pull the battery for half an hour to reset the ECU....

Price, including parts and labour is £640, as the garage wasn't willing to strip the module to replace the electric pump, so the part alone was £380, the pump on it's own is £80.

bingy1972 03-12-2011 08:52 AM

wow, mad they wudnt strip the module, carnt be that much of a job?
well i hope it sorts it am realy intrigued, big bill that, if that sorts it i will be tackling mine myself i think lol.
many thanxs again i can see me doing the same!

dcm1971 03-12-2011 01:50 PM

Collected the car, revs drop faster and runs better, may need an ECU reset.

The pump can be changed (ebay for the pump itself £80), the hardest bit is getting the pump out (drop the tank) and got to change the tank o-ring.

bingy1972 03-13-2011 06:01 AM

ahh great news, at least you seem to have solved the probem, proper pain, will let you know how i get on when i tackel it.
many thanxs for your help, rekon id ave been trying alsorts!

dcm1971 03-13-2011 05:25 PM

hold fire, the old faults are creeping back in...

Hunting at slight throttle in low gears
Revs dropping slower
kinda a pssssssssh noise from the footwell.

That's good that they didn't. I won't do it either. Those electric motor replacements go bad all too often. Saves you from double labor.

dcm1971 03-14-2011 02:11 PM

Possible new suspect is the EGR valve.

bingy1972 03-14-2011 06:39 PM

ohh no, a friend of mine suggested egr valve, anyway of testing it?

dcm1971 03-15-2011 02:14 AM

Take the pipe from the EGR Valve to the EGR Transducer off, plug the pipe and drive, if fault is gone, EGR valve is sooted up and needs replacing.

many thanx for that will be giving that a go for sure. you are most helpfull will be asking for you number lol
thanks again and good luck!

Slow to drop revs can often be a sign of an over lean mixture typically caused by an air leak somewhere. Check all your vacuum pipes e.g. going to the break booster, around the MAF etc. Their may be a hairline crack somewhere ir a jubille clamp that is loose or has slipped off. You can also read the colour of the plugs to see if the car is running lean. A very light brown to white will indicate this. Excessive heat in the exhaust system is alos a sure sign of fuel being overlean. In modern cars it can also be a result of a faulty Lambda sensor that thinks the system is too rich and is telling the ECU to lean out the fuel injection pulses.

bingy1972 03-16-2011 04:47 PM

many thanxs glowplug,
that was my first thought a airintake leak hence the over fuelin, coz it sure does especially on first start up, spit and splutters till its warmed a bit. then revs keep holding once warm and drops eventually, sometimes its worse than others. does my head in lol
cheers
