Starting issue
 

I have a 1998 Chrysler Grand Voyager (UK Spec) and it has developed an intermittant starting problem.

Every now and then the dash lights and dials will go off and the immobiliser will cut in. I then have to disconnect the battery and wait 15 minutes to start it again (the length of time the immobiliser recognises the key).

I have replaced the battery, the dealer has replaced the Security Interrogation unit (SKIM), supplied a new coded key and new remote fob but the problem still persits.

Any ideas what else to try?

The vehicle is in very good condition with 99,000 miles and full service history so has been looked after.

U have a bad printed circuit board in the cluster.

I would also check the 21 pin plug on the back of the heater panel (only 4 screw to remove) so easy to check yourself. The earth pin melts so the panel looses it’s earth so the bus network that your dash communicates on goes 12volts and so can no longer communicate. This shuts down the dash as all the dash info comes from the engine module and would also give you a SKIM communication fault code hence why your dealer replaced the skim.

Is the plug available seperatly?

I spoke to my local dealer and he checked on parts availability for the panel and said Europe wide they were selling one a week. Obviously a weak point on these models.

Would be good if I could change only the plug, not the panel as these are £275 (around $500).

I will check the plug in the next few days.

Hi Yes you can part number 05083230AA but I would get your dealer to check this number. I normally change the panel and the plug due to heat damage it needs both.

Sorted! Thanks guys!

Fitted a secondhand (£30 off ebay) instrument pack and it was the problem. Cleaned up all connections during install, which was very easy.

Now runs fine.

Merlin, I am new to the forum so sorry for piggy backing on this thread but I believe I am having a similar problem.
My 2003 2.5TD Manual is having what I blieve are intermittent immobiliser problems. When cold it seems to start OK but after I stop after a short drive it won't turn over as if it is immobilised. Almost like trying to start it without pressing the clutch. Is there a switch on the clutch or does this seem to be the dreaded earth issue?

Like the problem I had with my 2.5CRD for weeks until I eventually got sick of it. Remove connection at starter coil, clean coil spade, crush connector on wire slightly and refit. Silly little fault has had people having starters replaced.

Immobiliser issue
 

Hi guys, i too have problems with my immobiliser. I turn the key and dash light blinks off then on or sometimes stays on. It takes many attempts to start which it does eventually. Getting to the point now though where i go to fuel up and worry it wont start at the pump. Any advise will be appreciated.
