Time to Replace? 2001 Town & Country LXi
I have a 2001 T&C LXi with just under 130k miles. In the last 12,000 miles I have fixed a leak by the condenser for the rear ac, all brakes, power steering pump, new alternator, and starter.
Over the weekend, the check engine light came on and now I am recieving p 0700 and p 0740 codes. From my online research, it appears that I am going to be rebuilding the transmission even though I don't feel any issues with the shifting of the gears. My options that have been presented by my mechanic is to drop the pan and change the filter along with a fluid flush to see if that clears the issue. This would cost about $300. The alternative is to rebuild the transmission. Although no 2 rebuilds are alike, I am guessing the cost for this would be $1,500 to $1,800. My other option would be to do the fluid/filter service and then immediately trade in the van and hope it fixes the problem for the new owner. I am leaning towards the transmission rebuild based on my suspicion that with a rebuilt transmission, this van will be reliable again and a lot of the issues that are known and expensive on this year and model will already be repaired/replaced. Are there other items that I should inspect because they are known problems that could be costly repairs very soon? Does anyone think repairing the transmission would be a mistake and if so, why? Thanks for your thoughts and expertise, Michael |
