Timing and other Belt replacements
Today my garagedude is cursing loudly replacing my Clutch and hopefully he is done tomorrow.
In the meantime I tried to find out when was the last time the timing belt was replaced and in the books I could only find a replacement 130.000 km ago (like 80.000 miles ago) "maybe" the replacement has been done already like 40K miles ago but I cant be sure of that  So probably no choice than to replace anyway...and while I am at it, also replace the other belt(s) Now what to buy? *Timing belt set. 220 teeth + 2 idlers and 1 tensioner pulley I guess... *But what about the other belt(s) since we work on that side of the engine it makes sense to replace the belts for alternator and such too... Am I correct I need 2 belts (with airco)? Like one of 805 mm and one of 1420 mm? And what about pulleys there? Is there a need for a tensioner pulley to be replaced? |
If you are intending to keep the car for a while then it's worth changing the water pump, timing belt, idlers, tensioners and s belt. The power steering is a separate belt.
You can get timing kits that include belts and tensioners and idlers eg TIMING/CAM BELT KIT & WATER PUMP CHRYSLER VOYAGER IV 2.5 CRD [ENC Engines] 00- | eBay Couldnt find a complete S belt kit though Regards Richard |
Is the water pump really necessary?
It is normally not included in a timing bet kit and most of the time sold separately. I found a complete kit for the timing belt (without waterpump) and a set of the 2 belts all for decent prices And although I want to keep my car for many more years I have to make choices since I am a starting business owner I need to count my pennies ;) |
Is that real, kit and and Pump for £167, seams a bargàin to me. When I got mine done they were quoting Chrysler parts £250 for kit alone, £160 motorfactors. I'd jump at that price.

I can order a full distribution belt kit (contitech) plus the 2 acc, belts for €170,- (I've got a small discount at "mister-auto":D ) but that's without the waterpump. besides theres no shipping charge.
Waterpump would be like an extra €40,- On ebay: 167,- pound is € 210,- and then shipping on top of that, the seller ships for free only within UK and 15 days delivery outside UK :(. So I have a slight advantage for ordering in the Netherlands but still in doubt if I should order the waterpump.. |
Go for it...Will save you even more if pump goes later...

Yeah, talked to the mechanic and he told me that he experienced several times that after replacing timer belt and tensioners the waterpump breaks down.
Had something to do with the change in 'wear' on the bearings or something.. For those 40 bucks Im not risking it. |
