Treating Rust
 

There is a bit of rust on my car. Just curious if any of you have heard of POR-15. I'm pretty sure it helps to prevent rust but does it actually get rid of it? I'm always afraid these products don't really work.

Having owned cars in the 1960s and 1970s, I think I know all about rusty cars!

1) You gotta grind off as much rust as you can with a suitable disc. Just wire brushing alone is not enough. A file is handy too.
2) If the rust is bad, check the back of the steel panel as well. Again grind off as much as you can.
3) If you need to fill anything, traditional lead with 20/80 plumber's solder is still the best way, but you need practice and the right flux for steel. Otherwise it's the usual resin filler.
4) Rust has to be converted to the black version with acid, usually phosphoric.. Most of the well-known rust killers such as "Naval Jelly" etc. use this acid. This is the most important part of rust killing. (Reverse #3 and #4 for filler, I got these o/o/sequence).
5) You then need either white lead or red lead paint as a primer depending on your top coat color.
6) For hidden and underneath areas, two or three coats of trad. black underseal is good.

Do it this way and you'll have a few years before the rust breaks through again.
