If I recall correctly, there is a way to activate the trunk button to the left of the steering wheel for a few minutes without the key in the ignition. The trick is to remove power from the BCM (body control module) for a few minutes. When power is restored, the trunk button is active for a few minutes (at least 2).
The most reliable means is to disconnect the battery ground cable in the engine compartment (driver's side strut tower) Remove for at least 5 minutes. Reconnect the cable and proceed to press the trunk release button.
Another means is to remove power specifically to the BCM but I am not certain which fuse actually powers the BCM. I believe this can be done by pulling the IOD (ignition-off draw) fuse in the fuse panel at the end of left side of the dash panel. The IOD fuse has a special holder around it to allow you to pull the fuse but not remove it completely. Pull for 5 minutes and push back in. The trunk release button should be active, again for a few minutes.
Good luck,
