2004 sebring with mitsubishi 3.0 & F4A51 transmission
 

Hello all!

Quick question - Can I replace the original F4A51 K2FZB transmission with a F4A51 K2E6B transmission?

According to the manual, the "Z" in the original, is a "** The letter "Z" in the speedo gear position tells us that it is an electronic calculation done by the computer.".
I am concerned that since I have a "6" in the "new" tranny in that space, which stands for "29/36" in the speedo gear, that I messed up and got an incompatible tranny.
Can anyone confirm whether or not the 2 are compatible?

The Story -
I have a 2004 sebring with the Mitsubishi 3.0 V6 & F4A51 transmission. My daughter was on her way back from college and the tranny went out - would not move in any gear. Doing some research, it looks very likely the wave spring/ring went out causing a chain reaction and eventually killed the tranny pump. So I got a tanny from a guy on craigslist and the numbers did not match exactly. Put it in, car drives, but shifts hard. It also won't get out of first gear when in drive. Even when shifting thru the gears with the shifter, it stays in drive. I am fairly mechanically inclined. I have replaced many parts on cars and re-built several motors, heads, etc. along the way. Transmissions, however, I know nothing about. I am perfectly capable of swapping one out though, other than the fact that I did not research this enough before buying a tranny. ;oP.

Also, a correction. It stays in first gear in all the forward gear positions, not drive.
Park and reverse both work as they should, although shifting can be rough into reverse at times.

My, a lot of description but little actual diagnostic. Do you have a check engine light on the dash staying on? Although by year, kind of basic on codes a good scan could be of some good help. Depending on just what the donor trans came from, the TCM may not be compatible.

First and foremost, thank you for the input Rebel59. Yes I do have the check engine light showing. I'll pull the code on the car as soon as I get a battery for the car. It's been parked for some time now and the battery is dead. I got discouraged when I swapped trannys and it did not work correctly, so I just let the thing sit for a couple of years. Now I need it out of the driveway so I need to either get it fixed and sell it or cut my losses and part it out. When I did the tranny swap I replaced the axles, tie rod ends, motor/tranny mounts, and a bunch of other parts, so I really don't want to just part this thing out. I'll post the error code when I can get to it. I had the clutch go out in my truck yesterday, so that is more of an immediate problem. It's my only "backup" vehicle.

OK. Got a new battery, drove it around the neighborhood. Checked the codes and only 1 is showing. The code P0768 Shift solenoid D Electrical. So I swapped out all of the solenoids. (since I could not find documentation telling me which solenoid was D) Then drove around some more, checked the codes. Same thing - only 1 showing and it is the same as above. Any ideas as to what the issue may be are appreciated. TIA!

May want to check for any trans relay(EATX) or blown/corroded fuse in the engine compartment fuse panel. IF you find a rely(not sure by your year), it could be sticking up from the long sit. By 04 the relays are pretty much all the same for other things, you could try swapping same part# relays to that spot and see if that helps. Just take note of where you swap relay from.

OK, I checked the relays and they all look fine. (to me anyways) See pics below.
I am wondering about your comment earlier about TCM not being compatible. This seems like a good possibility to me.
Would the TCM need to be re-programmed for the new tranny since it has a slightly different number?
Can I take it to a shop and get them to re-program the TCM I have?
If I were to purchase a TCM compatible with the tranny I have in the car, how would I go about making sure it was the correct TCM based on my tranny #? (F4A51 K2E6B)

Did you try swapping the relay for the ETAX labeled position(the other relays are the same part)? also since it has been sitting for so long, did you check the trans wiring harness for broken/corroded wires, including those going into the bottom of the fuse panel?
I do not have the needed charts to say what TCM goes with the trans. you got or what year and vehicle it came from...Sorry but can't help you much on that question.
