Cold starting problems 2.5 CRD Help please!!
 

Hi I have a 2004 Voyager 2.5 CRD and it does not start in the mornings. It starts with Easy Start and runs fine. It will then restart hours later no trouble.

What I know is Glow Plugs are working and stay on for 20 seconds or so. Battery is ok and have tried it with jump leads but still no good.

The car drives fine, no smoke and pulls as expected. No issues once started.

I am wondering about fuel leaking back over night? Injector seals causing low compression? Blocked fuel filter? Poor fuel pump? I really dont know how to tackle it.

Anyone know What is the best thing for me to check and in what order?

Any help will be much appreciated.

PS I have done an injector leak off test and they are all quite even and not too much coming out either. Not sure what this proves though!

I dont know if its cold starting or just starting after a while that is the problem either!

You could try draining the water seperator located in front of rear axle, although your water seperator light should come up if there is an issue. However that would illiminate fuel issue. If your fuel filter is blocked the problem would exist while running.
What size cranking amp hour is your batt?? Through my own experiance would recommend a batt with at least 650-700 amp hr cranking rate.

I did drain that and only clean diesel came out! I think its an air leak but unsure how to check/find.

If I apply a fuel pressure gauge to the rail at startup in the morning will it be poor if air in system? How is the best way to check? Most lightly place to get air in?

Battery is an Optima battery which is a top of the range battery not square plates. It turns over fast, even jumped with another car at the same time it does not start!

Bit of easystart and shes away, no bad running, no smoke!

Drives smooth with no missfires and pulls well, no smoke no matter how hard I drive it visable.

Hi Wasptim,
There is a bleed off located at front of engine near alternator, may I suggest you try attaching clear hose to this immerse in a container with fuel and crank engine over for 30 sec at a time, for a couple of minutes. If this is done before you have car running then it will confirm air leak if it starts easy after test.
If that is the case, then I would check condition of leak back hose.
