04 sebring hesitation when driving

my 04 cyl 04 sebring has been hesitating intermittingly and the engine light comes on.
if i ease up on gas pedal and then reapply slowly it will drive fine, till it wants to hesitate again.
this car has been very good to me in the past. can someone give me some insight as to what the problem might be?? starting with cheapest repair. i am on a fixed budget. i was hoping it was bad gas, but i filled it up with high test and the problem remains.
please help
