POWER STEERING NOISE

Hello,

At first start up and when it's cold outside, my Concorde's power steering pump makes a squeaking type noise when the steering wheel is turned. This started 2 months ago. The car is an '01 with 52K miles. Is this noise a precursor to a pump failure? Should I add an aftermarket conditioner that eliminates squeals? I believe that the power steering fluid is ATF +4.The fluid has never been changed, I've never had any leaks and the level has always been good. Any thoughts would be appreciated...

I had a similar problem a year ago with my 2000 300M. Apparently the power steering fluid wears out. I flushed mine out with four quarts of Amsoil ATF and now it sounds like new.

Hello,

My noise is abit more of a nuisance now. I found out the PS fluid is the generic stuff (not ATF+4). I sucked out what was in the reservoir (only 6 ounces) and put in new. Basically, unless this site provides some wisdom, I'll just drive it till it breaks....

Hello Moe,

Can you mix ATF+4 with standard power steering fluid? If not, how do I drain the pump and rack? On this car, the rack is about even with the bottom of the pump (not significantly below it). Any info would be appreciated...

BTW Moe where in NJ are you? North, South Central?

Lucas makes a great power steering fluid. It conditions your existing fluid and seals, and it also prevents leaks. Buy a small bottle of it, pump out the resivoir, and add the Lucas.
