Default 1996 stalling

i have a 1996 sebring jxi... it has never given me any problems til recently.
i have hada tune up sparks changed, wires, and cap ...
yet when i drive the car... the rpm drops to zero and the car dies within seconds... i have no engine light problems or codes on computer... mechanic said he has no idea what it can be.. and says it may be a short.... any ideas???
after the stalling.. the car sometimes restarts immidiately.. sometimes it takes 10-15 minutes to restart.it stalls in dry or wet weather.. doesnt discriminate on weather norturning nor lights being on or off...
there has also been a few instances where after the rpm drops to zero.. the car regains the rpm and continues to drive without ever stalling... so im at a loss
