Default 2002 Sebring 2.7 sedan Failed "I/M"

Hi gang,

Just took my Sebring into my local county emission/registration center for the yearly registration. All was good on the safety portion but I was informed I had two codes showing "not ready". They were the Catalyst and the O2 Sensor. The guy asked if I had the battery disconnected recently. I told him about a month ago the thermostat housing was replaced and that the alternator had to be moved so I assumed the battery was disconnected for a period. He told me to drive the car around for at least 50 miles and and return for a "retest". I told him we had driven the car a couple of hundred miles since the repair.

Does this make any since to you all?

Thanks

They gave up on that nonsense in my state about 20 years ago. The only cars that were not passing the emissions tests were old clunkers that were exempt from repair requirements anyway.
That's not much help to you, though. Take it to Autozone or someplace that will read the codes for free and find out what codes are actually there. It might just be indicative of a couple of bad O2 sensors, but there's no point in guessing.

Thanks dcotter. Yeah, it's a drag. I did the "in car" code test by turning the ignition off and on three times and received no codes. Just the "done" afterwards.

I guess for now I'll just drive the extra 50 miles and try again. Waste of time?

So where are these "codes" coming from that they claim to have found at the test station? Is the guy wanting you to slip him 20 bucks to make them go away?

Tell me why again we want the government in charge of our health care?

Follow up: Drove the car about 70 miles after it failed emissions. Took her back in last Tuesday and both codes or "I/M not ready" went away. Crazy but good news!
