Default 2004 2.7 left us stranded

Yesterday on the way home our 2004 Sebring left us stranded. We started hearing a knocking noise, kind of like when a ball joint is dry. Stopped for lunch and it started to die on me. After lunch started back up and was still running rough. Made it about 2 miles or so and then the knocking started getting worse. The engine started to miss out and the CEL came on. Had to call Roadside assistance to get us a tow truck to take it to the dealer. Had to get a rental car to get home. The dealership won't be able to look at it until Monday. Anyone have any ideas as to what it might me?

2004 Sebring Sedan 57,587 miles

Thanks

ooohhh, sounds like an oil related failure, maybe a main crank bearing. That would lead to an engine re-build or drop in another one. Either way it sounds "$pencive". Sorry for your troubles.

We bought an extended warranty up to 70,000 miles so we should be covered.

Heard back from the dealership on the status of the car. #4 cylinder was getting spark some of the time and some of the time not. Going to replace the plug wires and plugs. Also the differential cover is dented and transmission fluid is leaking. Going to replace the cover, service the transmission to check to be sure no dirt is in there because of the leak, and new transmission fluid. None of this is covered under my extended warranty since it is all considered maintainance. $427.00 worth of maintainance

That's why I do that myself. I'm off warranty. I couldn't wait to get off warranty so I could not take it to the $arage just for simple maintenance.
