Default Check Engine/Engine Malfunction Light stays on

We drove our '04 Sebring with a loose gas cap and the CEL came on. I thought the light would go out after a few driving cycles. Nope. Also tried the ignition switch on-off-on-off-on. No help. How do I get the light to go out, assuming there's nothing else wrong that would throw the code?

Why not slap a code reader on it and find out what is going on? Drive it over to your local Autozone and ask them to read your codes. In most states they'll do it for free.
They can turn off the light if it's nothing or give you some information if it's not.

My neighbor brought his meter over and the code showed Evap malfunction--what you get for a loose gas cap. We just pushed a button that cleared the code and turned off the CEL. Problem solved. Thanks for your advice.
