If you mean a different design engine, like a 2.5 liter V-6 or a Ford v-8, sure you can do it if you are prepared to re-engineer the plumbing, electrical, exhaust, controls, engine mounts and connection to the transmission. You'll probably spend $10,000 and wind up with a car that's worth about $500.
If you mean replace the engine with another of the same design, the answer is also yes, and it'll be a lot simpler.
The question is, as always, is it going to be a worthwhile expenditure of money to put a new engine in an old car?
