Default ignition timing off????

i replaced the distribitor with at 7272 instead if the stock 7171 i put it in the exact position that it came out in.... has a terrible missfireing and you can smell some serious gas fumes...im trying to get it at TDC but the cams have yellow marks that line up with yellow marks on the houseing...but the crank pully has a notch that lines up with the block lines , theres a yellow line thats about 30 back from the notch that lines up with nothing... and the distributor is right in the middle of 1 and 6 .. i really dont want to spend the half hour taken off the intake mani just to set cylinder 1
