Default might buy a 01 sebring convertable but has issues

Main problem with this car I'm told from the owner is it has a bad water pump. So we took the car for a short drive, because front wheel bearing are bad. Got back to her house we let the car idle for a good half hour. The car didn't over heat, temp gauge never went over the half way point, fans came on and I didn't notice any leaks. I asked her what made her think the water pump is bad and she said because it boils over after an hour of driving. She also took the car to a local shop and they told her it was the pump. oh and I checked the oil cap didn't notice any milky stuff and I could see oil moving freely inside. Engine sounded good, no tic tic tic lol Any thoughts? She's asking $ 1000 US I'm thinking of offering 700. Had a 02 intrepid bought new got 76 thou miles on her and then the slug problem came up. I like the sebring but weary of paying too much. Any thoughts? Thanks Nick

There are a lot of possible reasons for overheating. Could be clogged radiator inside or out, wrong or insufficient anti-freeze, bad thermostat, bad radiator cap, etc, etc. If you don't see water in the oil then I would not replace the water pump. The earlier (01-02) models of the 2.7 were more prone to the sludge problem. They either have a sludge problem or they don't. Regular oil changes using the recommended oil can help prevent it.

It's a soon-to-be 15 year-old car, so it's going to have problems. If the body's in good shape and you're not afraid to get your hands dirty, you won't have lost much with a $700 investment.

Thanks for the reply. I looked at a few over the weekend. All of them have great bodies but engine problems but this one is the best so far. I'm gonna give her an offer, see what she says.
