Default Recurring speed sensor problem 2001 Sebring LXi Conv.

Hi everyone,

I'm hoping someone here knows about this problem, because my ,echanic is stumped. I bought my Sebring (2.7L) late 2002 with 28,000 miles on it. 4 months afterI had it, I was driving home from vacation and all of a sudden the car started shifting hard and woudln't settle in a gear. when it did, it seemed to like 2nd gear. The dealer said it was just a transmissions chip, not a big deal , my transmission was fine.

Well the car has done this off and on, and every time I replace the speed sensors, it acts up ina few weeks. Now it does this every time it rains. Fortunately, I can turn the car off and back on and that usually fixes the problem, though the check engine light stays on for quite a while.

I put in a new transmission in January in order to pass inspection - the chips kept going bad and it wouldn't pass the emission test. i was told (by my honest mechanic) that the chips had metal shavings on them that were coming from the transmission.

So, new transmission, same problem except now it seems worse. The car now has a new problem - the spedometer needle bounces around one I hit 50 mph, and the car knid of hiccups and feels like it might bog out and die at any minute. My mechanic had it for a week solid, traced all the wires, drove it around and can't find any reason why speed sensors don't last more than a few days in my car. His next guess is that the computer is bad. He also can't see why rainy weather affects a magnetic sensor.

Any ideas? this car is now a chore to drive - every morning on my commute I have to pull over somewhere and turn the car off and on, the spedometer was acting up today, and my normally smooth ride is full of all these hiccups. I think I got a lemon, but after this car I don't think I'll be too anxious to buy Chrysler again.

u dont have a lemon u just have a car that who ever u are taking it to does not have experence in this sorta thing. Sounds like a dealer trip is in the works for u. There is nothing that can be said on here to fix your issue and btw what is a transmissions chip ne way? I think it has something to do with the wires but thats just my 11 years of chryslers talking.

No, I'm pretty sure I have a lemon - I can't go 3 months without dragging it to the shop. I've taken it to Chrysler dealers twice for this problem, and I was told there was nothing wrong with my transmission (which there was).

The first time it happened I took it to Chrysler, and that's when I was told it was the chip that controlled the transmission and not to worry. After a few years of this recurring, I took it to Chrysler again (post-warranty) and they found nothing.

The reason I take it to my mechanic is that he didn't charge me a dime when he had the car for a full week because he didn't fix the problem. I'd like to find the Chrysler dealer who will do the same thing.

But I posted on here hoping that someone may have had the same issues (since this may be unique to Chrsyler) and knew what the root of the problem is. My mechanic replaces input/output sensors on cars all the time and he never saw this issue before.

But I have one additional question. Anyone know why rainy weather would make the car act up more? It's drizzly here, and my car hardly shifted right the entire ride into work. Why would rain affect the sensors?

K

it wont it would affect the wires going to the sensor or connector issue. I would haft to see it first hand inorder to make a correct assesment of this issue.

Well, I finally found out what was causing my sensors to go bad within days (or hours) of getting them replaced. It's the new transmission I had put in (rebuilt whatever it was) in January of this year. I thought for sure the computer had gone bad. There is slippage inside the transmission that trips the output sensor and basically screws up my world. I did notice that the car started acting up about a week after the new tranny went in, but nothing out of the ordinary. But the month of July it was out of control and probably not safe to drive. Wonder what I can get back from the guys who did the transmission - actually, my regular mechanic will stick up for me.

Glad that I finally know how to fix this problem - annoyed that it will cost me more $$$$.
