Default Squeeky Wheel?

I have noticed a play in the steering wheel since transporting my car on a carrier. I guess that Ihave only myself to blame, since I forced in the steering wheel locking mechanism at some point, simply to ensure that the wheels do not turn during the transport. D'oh!

Squeeky noise comes from the steering column in the vehicle, close to the point where it leaves the car interior - there are two joints, not sure what they are called but I could find out which one is squeeky.

Steering wheel has play when the car is standing still, engine not running or during operation.

Am I looking at a major repair here or is this going to be easy on my wallet?

Thank you,

Joe.
