Default Towing with a 2006 Sebring/Stratus sedan

I just bought a mopar hitch for my 2006 Sebring/Stratus 2.7l sedan. How much can I tow? Most of the websites for hitches say that a class 1 hitch is good for up to 2000 pounds. Of course, the owner's manual, and the mopar hitch say 1000 lbs. More than enough for my little utility trailer, but not enough for my pop-up camper. It's 1500-1600 lbs. Will the mopar hitch handle the weight like other class ones, or am I out of luck?

As for the drivetrain, will adding a trans cooler, and changing the fluid more often help? We would be towing the camper 50 miles or so one way, once a month or so. I'm sure the drivetrain can handle it. My boss tows a similar pop-up with a toyota corolla, so I figured a 2.7l Sebring/Stratus would handle it.

A good rule is no more than half the weight of the tow vehicle.
