Our 2013 Chrysler 300 has developed an obvious ticking noise in the engine (3.6L Pentastar; at idle and frequency increases with RPM; 80k miles; 5w-20 synthetic oil every 5k; E10 fuel, never E85). Everything I read online points to rocker arms. Our main dealer in the area wanted to first try an engine oil additive treatment, which we tried...with no effect. A couple months later, we then took the car to a small shop that said it was probably a rocker arm. They advised us to get rid of the car and wouldn't even give a repair quote. They also said they detected a low oil pressure code, which I never picked up with my VERY CHEAP scanner, so I didn't doubt. We then went back to the dealer with the rocker arm theory. They proceeded to advise and did complete the work shown in the attached receipt photo (NOTHING to do with a rocker arm). Surprise surprise, the ticking remains. Any ideas would be so welcomed!
I had the ticking and an oil leak on my 14 dodge journey with the V6 pentastar engine. Searching online and found it was probably the oil filter housing leaking and at least one bad rocker arm ticking. Sourced a $100 metal filter housing to replace the plastic Mopar junk and got a few rocker arms for $4 a pop from rock auto. After about 7 hours under the hood with basic metric sockets and hex bits, no more leak, no more tick (only one failed rocker arm bearing), and also some fresh spark plugs installed. Ended spending about $250 for the filter housing, rocker arms, spark plugs, new gaskets, oil, and coolant.
Good job. I have this same engine with the failed rocker arm bearing in a 2013 T&C van. I'm debating whether I want to tackle this myself or not. It seems the rear side would be very hard to get to since the engine is transversely mounted that side of the engine is tucked up tight against the firewall.
