Default Mold From AC -- Buying Decision

We are seriously considering buying an Aspen with around 158k on it. We like it, but there is a fairly strong mold smell from the AC vents (a 7 out of 10).

I see there is some talk about a known issue with these, and chrysler issued a disinfectant/evaporator seal to combat it.

Anyone have experience with beating this? If I had to tear down the hvac and remove the evap/heater core, how bad is it? (I had to do a PT Cruiser the other day and it took 4 days).

Thanks!

Years ago I had a problem with moldy smell in my Concorde. Pouring a cup of bleach into the cowl in front of the windshield and letting it sit overnight helped a little. There are (or used to be) commercial kits you could buy to deal with the problem. Try doing a search on the internet.
