Default oil change - cross member in way

Hey guys,

I have a 2009 Aspen with the 5.7 MDS engine. I did my first oil change and found that a cross member is right underneath the oil drain plug. I got the plug out ok but had a big mess with the oil splashing off the cross member. Sorry I don't know exactly what this cross member does but I would like to know what you guys are doing to avoid this mess.

thank you,
Kevin

Yeah, oil changes for this vehicle are messy. You can try to direct the oil flow from the drain plug with a funnel or something, or just wipe the cross member when you're done. I do the latter.

Yep one of the messiest oil changes I have done on any vehicle that I've owned. The filter is a PITA too to get down away from engine without spilling oil all over the place. I just wipe everything down when finished with oil drained and new filter on.

One of the first things I ordered for my first oil change is a Fumoto Quick Drain valve. These things are great. Have them on all my vehicles. Replaces the original drain plug and has a quick release lever to drain so no more worrying about stripping out drain plugs or pans. You can also get them with "Nipples" to be able to attach a tube to and direct the flow around the cross member. For just under $30 directly from their website, it's a great investment.
