Default Programming remote key fob

I lost one of our keys at the beach (bad day). I picked up a new key with remote, and I'd like to program it before bringing to the dealer to cut and program the chip inside to make sure it works.

Can this be done with only one working remote? I searched google and could not find this info.

2009 Aspen with factory remote start on keyfob.

Thanks!

According to the owners manual, page 15, you must have at least two valid keys already programmed to the system to add any additional keys. Since you only have one which works now, you will have to go to the dealer.

From the manual:

Replacement Keys
NOTE: Only keys that are programmed to the vehicle electronics can be used to start and operate the vehicle. Once a Sentry Key is programmed to a vehicle, it cannot be programmed to any other vehicle.

CAUTION!
Always remove the Sentry Key from the vehicle and lock all doors when leaving the vehicle unattended.

At the time of purchase, the original owner is provided with a four-digit Personal Identification Number (PIN). Keep the PIN in a secure location. This number is required for authorized dealer replacement of keys. Duplication of keys may be performed at an authorized dealer or by following the customer key programming procedure. This procedure consists of programming a blank key to the vehicle electronics. A blank key is one which has never been programmed.

NOTE:
When having the Sentry Key Immobilizer System serviced, bring all vehicle keys with you to an authorized dealer.

Customer Key Programming
If you have two valid Sentry Key, you can program new Sentry Key to the system by performing the following procedure:

1. Cut the additional Sentry Key Transponder blank(s) to match the ignition switch lock cylinder key code.

2. Insert the first valid key into the ignition switch. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position for at least three seconds, but no longer than 15 seconds. Then, turn the ignition switch to the LOCK position and remove the first key.

3. Insert the second valid key into the ignition switch. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position within 15 seconds. After 10 seconds, a chime will sound. In addition, the Vehicle Security Alarm Indicator Light will begin to flash. Turn the ignition switch to the LOCK position and remove the second key.

4. Insert a blank Sentry Key into the ignition switch. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position within 60 seconds. After 10 seconds, a single chime will sound. In addition, the Vehicle Security Alarm indicator Light will stop flashing. To indicate that programming is complete, the Vehicle Security Alarm Indicator Light will turn on again for three seconds and then turn off.

The new Sentry Key is programmed. The Remote Keyless Entry transmitter will also be programmed during this procedure.

Repeat this procedure to program up to eight keys. If you do not have a programmed Sentry Key, contact your authorized dealer for details.

NOTE: If a programmed key is lost, see your authorized dealer to have all remaining keys erased from the system’s memory. This will prevent the lost key from starting your vehicle. The remaining keys must then be reprogrammed. All vehicle keys must be taken to an authorized dealer at the time of service to be reprogrammed.

I have programmed remote fob from 24 hour locksmith brooklyn near me but that fob doesn't last longer. So, it ended up getting a new fob from the dealer.

The new key needs to be inserted into the ignition switch and turned to run in order for it to be programmed which means the key does need to be cut. If you have only one key you will need to visit a dealer or a locksmith.

If the locksmith is able to program a key they should be able to remove a key.

There is a windows software tool that can be purchased that will allow you to program a key and remove old keys. The software costs $50 and will only register to one FCA vehicle. It will also require an OBD dongle that costs about $40. The software is 'appcar'. I have used is to program keys on my 2014 200 after they have been cut.

The tool allows you to pull diagnostic codes from all the computer modules. For example, I bought the 2 vehicle license. When the airbag light on my daughter's '06 charger came on, I was able to pull the specific code and determine that because she had pile a bunch of stuff on the passenger seat for a bit, when she removed the stuff the seat sensors reported a calibration problem. Leaving the stuff off for a week or so allowed the sensors to re-calibrate and the abs lamp turned out.

Sounds like the second key that sets off the alarm no longer is communicating with the immobilizer system. 1st thing I would do is replace the battery to see if it's something simple. If it still won't disarm alarm, then you will probably need a new key which means a trip to the dealer or locksmith.

Try reprogramming the second key with the alarm so that it will communicate again and work like new. Contact a local auto locksmith to get this done.
