05 Pacifica AWD Using Oil
58K miles on my Pacifica, lately it's been using about 1.5 qts. of oil after about 2k miles. I've been using 5w30 Mobil 1 about every 5k miles. What would cause this oil usage? I don't see signs of oil burning or leaking. I use the Pacifica to tow my Miata during track season(about 3500lbs). Probably about 2k miles per season. I've been doing that since 05. Never had this problem before.

My 06 has been using about 1 quart every 1500 miles since I got it new. I just check it often. I don't think its a good thing, but I have read on the forums that a lot of people have the problem. It might be worth having checked out if you can't find anything wrong yourself. My car doesn't burn or leak oil. It "consumes" it. :)

I'm nearing the end of my Chrysler extended warranty. It ends at 60K miles. I'm going to bring it in and see if they can figure anything out. If they can't come up with any answer I'll just keep checking the oil and adding oil.

Every Chrysler product I've ever owned ends up using oil at some point during its life. My 2006 Pac starting using oil just before 40,000 miles. Try using 10W30 oil. I did and it slowed it down some, but I still have to add a quart about every 2,000..

Industry standards for normal engine oil consumption: Mileage below 50,000: Normal oil consumption is one quart for each 1,000 miles driven. Mileage above 50,000: Normal oil consumption is one quart for each 750 miles driven. If my 1997 Dodge truck was using that much oil, I would be tearing that sucker down and finding out why!! I'm using about a quart every 3000. And it has 100,000 miles on it If you still have a warranty on your powertrain make the dealer fix it. Piston rigns or something. Don't take no for an answer. |

Common Problem
I have an 05 Pacifica. This IS a common problem with this car. Two year ago, at 80k miles, I had them put a new engine in the car and now I have no problems. I would consistently run out of oil before the 3000 miles were up. When I first purchased the car with 26k on it, it had the problem and I took it in to have it looked at. They recommended that I do a oil consumption test. This is where I took the car in every 500 miles to check oil levels. I did this for 1500 miles and there was very little consumption, so I was told there was not a problem. I lived with this for another 60k, changing the oil every 2500 miles to avoid running dry. Finally, I insisted that we re-do the oil consumption test, this time all the way through the 3000 miles. Sure enough the first 1500 not a problem, then after that I used more than 1 quart every 500 miles. After getting management involved, they agreed that there was indeed a problem and took the engine apart to discover that it needed a new one. I was told that once the engine was apart, they could see the damage of the oil loss.
I suggest you fight the dealer. I printed off many forums like this with all the problems and took it to the service manager and also emailed the dealer management. (I also purchased the car from this dealer, certified) It took almost 3 months for the new engine to arrive because of the financial issues Chrysler had a few years back, so be ready for a long wait. Good Luck! |
Thank you for that post.

Well I have a little problem with my 2006 Pacifica (66000 miles on the odometer - out of warranty) which is consuming oil and I want some advice from experts on this forum.
These days I am adding one quart of oil every 2000 miles or so and I use 10W-30 . There is no oil leaking on the ground so my guess is that my car is burning it. Also for last 6 months I have been topping off the coolant ever 2 months. So I have few questions regarding what is best course of action here. 1) What do you guys think, how long the engine would last if I do nothing than keep adding oil and coolant? 2) Would it be sensible to let engine die in due time (my estimate is 2 years or so) instead of getting it fixed now and then have a re-manufactured engine put in when time comes? Thanks for reading. |

My 2005 AWD also burns oil. I am thinking of adding Lucas Oil Stabilizer.

Thanks Just keep adding oil..I have tried 3 different oils up to synthetic with no change. So I am just going to watch it and put the cheap stuff in. Coolant..Thats another issue. If you continue to add more and more coolant you will have to watch for a head leak..You can have a tech do a chem test to see if thats the case. If it is leaking from somewhere else it will get worse. |
Can catalytic converter be damaged by excessive oil use?
Hi,
My 06 Pacifica started burning about one quart every 1200 miles and it started doing it within last 20,000 miles. Incidentally I recently had to put a new catalytic converter at about 70,000 miles. I was wondering if such level of oil use (1 quart per 1,200 miles) can damage the catalytic converter? Does anyone has any knowledge about it? |

Your cat should be under warranty..I beleive 8 years 80,000 miles. Check your manual if you paid. Cats do not go bad unless there is a defect. Cats usually go bad cause there is a problem. I would try high mileage oil next to see if that helps at all. |

Thats a little to much oil consumption and yes oil can destroy a cat if the engine is burning it up.

But I am wondering, how long this new one would last if my car keep using up the oil. |
My 05 FWD Pacifica Uses a quart every 1500 miles as well  But I just keep checking and filling it for now.

Mopar Combustion Chamber Cleanerd
Most of the opinions I have sought for my 3.5L Pacifica's oil leak problem have pointed towards piston rings not sealing properly; either because rings are worn/broken or there is carbon accumulation on rings. I have heard of a product called "Mopar combustion chamber cleaner" which can be introduced into chambers through the spark plug holes in an attempt to de-carbonize the piston rings. You can search internet for exact procedure details. And it is suggested to do a leakdown/compression test before this procedure.
Has anyone tried "Mopar combustion chamber cleaner" or a similar product with success? Or is this snake oil product like some oil additives? Best;) |
I have 122K on our '05, and it has made oil disappear since it was new. Never a leak, can't see it out of the tailpipe. I won't miss that as we get rid of it.

My car is still using up oil and I am convinced that burning all this oil has something to do with Cat converter going bad so soon. Has anyone else with the car using oil had Cat. Conv. going bad? Has anyone found the reason or solution to the oil burning problem? |
