2004 PT Cruiser 2.4L...Cranks...No Start (non-turbo)
I was driving the PT Cruiser during a family emergency....I think I went over speed bumps too fast...The Malfunction Indicator came on...My 1st thought was get to the gas station and add oil..I had difficulties making it to the gas station a quarter of a mile away..I put in a quart (put in a court the next night before also)...It was driving rough and it died...Had to have the car towed home...I know very little about cars..I'm unsure if it was the "Limp Mode"...BTW...I bought the car 2 weeks prior and had a mobile mechanic look it over...He noticed a leak fluid in the radiator??I've had Nissans for the last decade...
I had my battery tested at Auto Zone and was told it was good...It was my 1st time taking off a battery...I bent the connector by tightening it but tried to bend it back...Tried to use scan tool but had difficulties taking it off...Relatives thought the issue was the starter...I purchased a used starter...Had a relative replace it...It wouldn't crank or start...I used a scan tool and received Codes P0517, P0522 & Battery was disconnected...I realized my relative didnt connect the battery temperature sensor and the battery cables were loose...I fixed it...Battery voltage was 12.5...I also obtained Freeze Frame Data...Not sure what all of the data means...
I used an OBD again and received codes P700 & P562...I had a few fuses blow out as well...Mostly 20A in the PDC...It seemed each time I tried to attach the OBD I blew a fuse so I stopped connecting it..I put on a new negative battery connector...Still no crank no start...Had AZ recheck the batttery... They said it wouldn't keep a charge and the voltage was 12.6...Told me I needed a new battery...Grabbed a cheap battery from Wally World (Walmart)...
I've watched countless videos and read numerous forums about the PT Cruiser...Now the PT cranks but doesn't start...Lights and windows work... Bought a test light, Multimeter & Spark Tester....I checked my fuses, relays (5 pins) & circuits/cavaties...My starter relay has no Ground at Pin 85 (Coil Ground) with or without the key...The 87 Pin (Normally Open & goes to the Load) is Grounded with no key...86 Pin (Coil Battery) was Grounded with key in...I'm unsure if I was supposed to try to start the car so I put it in the Run position..My FP/ASD relay had Power on 85, Ground on 86 & Power on 30 with and without the key...It doesn't seem like the Spark Tester fits in my car...I just learned to read wiring schematics...
I checked the bolt on Starter Solenoid and it has power...Tried to use Multimeter to check battery but it sparked...Sprayed Starter Fluid in the air intake as well but it continues to crank but won't start...I'm concerned about the P700 code...I cleaned the Throttle Body...Checked the transmission fluid color...The timing belt was changed at 120k the PT has around 140k but they didnt replace the water pump...
I'm considering checking the PCM pins in the morning...
I tried to jump pins 30 & 87 and it sparked...Tested Starter & FP/ASD relay but didn't notice a click...Listened for the fuel pump at the gas tank but didn't hear anything...
I think it's the wiring in C102 or a bad ground...Any thoughts?? Please help!

I have an’04 Cruiser that we’ve owned since new. I had driven to meet with a client and was having no issues with the car. It was running fine when I turned it off to go meet the client. When I returned to the car and tried to start it, it would only crank but wouldn’t start. Had it towed to a mechanic and found out that the timing belt had broken. It was the original belt and I had about 160,000 miles on the clock when it happened. I’m now at about 217,000 miles.
