Default 2004 PT Cruiser overheating

My parents have a 2004 Chrysler PT Cruiser that we put coolant in and then it proceeded to overheat repeatedly. It won't go a quarter mile without overheating. I think it may be the thermostat but I'm not sure. My dad tried to drive it a few miles with it hot and thinks he may have blown the head gasket. Has anyone else had this issue? How do I know what the problem is?

well several things first when you put the coolant in there is a bleeder screw right below it do you open in when u put the coolant in? if not chances are its only getting into the radiator part and not the block.

Second ac on or ac off fan work?
