Default Turns over will not start, was pushing water!

I found a 2007 PT Cruiser convertible I could not pass up! Only problem is it will not start! Previous owner ran it into some mud and after being pulled out drove the car about 6 miles before it slowly started to slow down and then died! They towed it to a shop and the shop said it had a bad head gasket and was pushing water out, but when checking the oil there is no water in the oil! So what could keep it from starting???? Any answers from others that had the same problem will help me fix it before having to tear it down!

I don't have a code ready and unless they are super cheap I'm not buying one!
