Default Wheel shopping

I'm doing some wheel shopping and my choices are 17x9 or 18x7.25. I have an issue with that. I'm not necessarily looking at diameter, I'm looking at how wide it they are. Mainly I looking to have better handling as well as traction. Before we get into anything I want everyone to understand that I'm going for a functional street car. I'm not trying to spend $3k on wheels but i also know with good quality and style comes at a price. Yes I'm aware that wider tires up front could affect certain things which I've already gone and did some digging in to that. So I'm curious about how wide can I got before needing a spacer or an adapter. If any one knows any sizes let me know I'd like to hear some ideas or suggestions. Thank you.
