Default 01 radio etc

Have an '01 Town/Country. Radio display reads: "EEEEE" with the van on and off; it used to just reset the timewhenever anybutton was pushed.

Other history: daughter put a bunch of coins in the CD/tape players about a year ago. I had toswitch-off power to the CD player, and I haven't gotten around to switching it out yet.Got all but one coin out of the tape player though, and it worked fine until this "EEEE" thing that has the radio and tape player both out.

Also, driver door power "unlock" sounds like a half-dead duck. Driver door power window works most of the time.

Any ideas? I don't want to have this crazy radio suck the battery like I've read about. Also, could this be partly stemming from the '01-'02 radio Recall issues?

If your daughter put coins in the thing, I would suspect that's the problem. It shorted something out that finally just blew. The recall was b/c the A/C vent would drip condensation on top of the radio. Of course that could damage the radio too, but I would think that would have happened long ago if that was the cause, but you could check with a dealer if the recall work was ever done on your van (they just put insulation on the vent to prevent the condensation.) If the recall work was not done, you may be able to get them to replace the radio, although that's awefully old for them to do that.

If you are interested in a replacement cassette radio and 4-cd changer I have them in good condition as I removed them from our 01 Limited to replace them with a DVD system. PM me if you are interested in buying them. It's very easy to swap them out.

If your power door lock is making a screeching sound, it may go on working for a while, but to fix it you'll have to replace the lock actuator, which I believe is built into the latch mechanism. In that case, you'll want to buy a new one so it won't have the problem again.

I also had problems with my driver's window not fun when it gets stuck in the down position when it's raining. I replaced the regulator with an aftermarket one made by Dorman. It's reasonably priced and although it operates a little slower than the stock version it has been reliable for a little over a year now.

Default RE: 01 radio etc

texolombia decided to buy my radio and cd-changer and I sent him some instructions on replacing them. I thought I should post here for everyone's benefit:

You'll need the following tools:

Phillips screwdriver
Flathead screwdriver
Pliers/socket or wrench

The steps are as follows:

1) Disconnect the negative lead to the battery, turn the ignition key to the "run" position and leave it there for 1 minute. (This is a safety measure against shorting out something electronic and it will deactivate the airbags so you don't have to worry about triggering them while your opening up the dash. BTW although I don't think you'll find any, if you do see any yellow connectors, leave them alone. You can push them around a bit, but don't probe them or anything since they are part of the airbag system.)

2) Remove the cupholder. Do this by pulling it as far as it goes, reaching in at the top, center and pushing the little tab that releases it, then pull it all the way out.

3) Remove trim strip at bottom of center dash panel. You'll see this separate trim-colored strip just above where the cupholder was. Insert your flathead screwdriver under it from the bottom (where the cupholder was, and near each end of the strip) and carefully pry the strip toward the back of the vehicle. It is secured by metal clips that will pop out.

4) With the strip removed, you'll see four phillips head screws. Remove the two that are closer to the center (they are still at the edge, just more toward the center than the other screws).

5) Pull off the center trim panel. Start at the bottom where you removed the screws get your fingers under the flange that was held by the screws and pull firmly, but carefully. The center panel is held on by clips similar to those that hold the small trim strip you previously removed. Work your way around the panel (that covers the radio, cd player and includes the center vents), popping the metal clips.

6) You will find that the HVAC controls and some of the panel switches are attached to the trim panel. To get the trim panel out of the way, you need to disconnect the connectors to these things. Just slide the red tab on the connectors over to the side (you may want to gently push them with the flathead screwdriver)and push the lever while pulling the connectors to release them. Be gentle with the connectors, they should slide out easily when properly released and you don't want to break anything.

7) With the trim panel out of the way, you'll see that the radio and CD changer are held in by phillips head screws. Remove the screws, slide these out, disconnect the connectors at the back of them (none of these have the red tab, but they do have a little lever you push or a tab to pry up to release them should be obvious when you look at them.) The radio has a ground strap that is attached to the back of it with a small bolt. Connect all the connectors to the new radio and CD changer, slide them in and attach with the screws. Don't forget the ground strap on the radio Chrysler in its wisdom grounded many of the dash electronics through the radio, so this is essential.

8) Assembly is pretty much reverse of removal, connect all the panel connectors, carefully line up the metal clips with their holes and firmly press them back in as you work your way around the panel. put the screws back in at the bottom, reinsert the cupholder, turn the ignition off, reconnect the battery and you are done.
