Lightbulb Amber "Engine" icon...

... came on the other day. Nothing unusual happened, it just went "bing" and on came the light, no engine issue, no coughing or spluttering or anything as far as I could tell. Haynes tells me it is a multi-function error indicator and I can read the error code with some kind of device I plug into the diags plug under the dash.... Can the assembled experts shed some light on the following, please:

1. Where can I get one of these?

2. What is the most usual cause of the indicator coming on (given that the car still starts and runs fine)

I do admit that it is badgering me to have a service ("0 miles to service" message at startup), so is this just re-inforcing the requirement?

Also, the PAS punmp is whining (my car-shop man has one on order but Chrysler keep sending the wrong one!!!)

Any idea would be gratefully received.

Cheers

GL.
