? ATF+3 or ATF+4 pre 99 minivan's ?
Transmissions seem tobe trouble -- but how about the info in the TSB -- are the people whowrite themas confused as we are ???
USE OF WHAT IN A PRE-1999 MINIVAN. VERY CONFUSING SERVICE BULLETINS
USE of ATF+4 vs ATF+3
*TSB:21-006-01 6/29/2001 IN LARGE LETTERS says" NOTE :THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO ALL VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH CHRYSLER AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS EXCEPT 1999 AND EARLIER MINIVANS." -- very SPECIFIC
-Three Years Later-
* TSB 21-004-04, - 3/16/2004,WHICH SAID insmall letters= " NOTE: This bulletin applies to all transmissions manufactured by Chrysler except for 1999 and earlier minivans with the41TE/AE transmission" ------ well small letters --must be not as SPECIFIC huh!!!
*But than on April 14, 2006 The TSB said to get rid of all the old TSB??? (WHY SUCH A BIG SWITCH IN POLICY ) "THIS BULLETIN SUPERSEDES TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN 21-004-04, DATED MARCH 16, 2004, WHICH SHOULD BE REMOVED FROM YOUR FILES. THIS IS A COMPLETE REVISION". -----NO MENTION OF "1999 AND EARLIER MINIVANS"
So who really knows what to use ???

RE: ? ATF+3 or ATF+4 pre 99 minivan's ?
I guess MOE -- ATF+4 --that is what it has to be.
I read some where their had been some problems in using ATF+4 in the pre 1999 minivans - (seals , etc ) ---- but ATF+3 is not being made anymore ----- also I saw some MULTIPURPOSE ATF's which are suppose to replace everything ----- I don't think that is or would be the best solution.

I went to the dealer today to get some power steering fluid and they handed me a ATF+4. The manual says not to use It but they use It any ways and theysaid That's ok forthis type ofcar. I have a 2001 Town and country LX. Is there going to be any harm this way thanks.

The manual doesn't say "not to use ATF+4", it says to use ATF+3 because it was written before +4 existed. Chrysler made the +4 to replace +3. There is now a TSB that includes 01 minivans and says to use the +4. The +4 is a fully synthetic fluid and is better than +3.
The reason Chrysler phased it in with the successive TSBs is so that they and their dealers would not get stuck with a huge left-over stock of ATF+3 that they couldn't sell.
BTW-- never, ever use or allow a shop to use a "universal" fluid with a magic bottle of "converter". Many transmissions have died because of this.
Oh-- I noticed you said "power steering fluid"-- There is a separate TSB on this that your dealer should be willing to print for you, I'm pretty sure it includes all of the 01 minivans (like mine), but there are some vehicles that still need plain old power steering fluid.
